Radio News: April 2017

The April 2017 edition of the 3BBR FM newsletter, Radio News, is now available online.

I started writing this on the 24th April, scratching my head wondering when the Indian Summer we have been experiencing will come to an end. It seemed like we’ve been broadcasting maximum temperature forecasts of 20 to 25 degrees for days and weeks. Not that I was complaining – we’ve still had reasonable rains so the gardens are looking beautifully green, amply decorated with a pastiche of autumnal colours. Then as if to take the wind right out of my proverbial sails, wintery conditions launched themselves with a vengeance on Anzac Day with icy winds, plenty (more) rain and forecast maximum temperatures plummeting down to 13 degrees.

On a personal note I should mention that I’ve recently had some surgery and whilst the prognosis is good I will require radiotherapy shortly which might mean taking a little time out to recuperate so I’d very grateful to any other presenters who are willing to stand in for me if needs be.

As I mentioned in our last Newsletter, 2017 is a busy year because the Board is required to submit an application for renewal of our Broadcast Licence to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). This process happens every five years and as part of it we have to demonstrate that we are meeting the requirements of the Broadcast Act and Code of Practice. As you can imagine a considerable amount of planning and preparation is needed to put the submission together. Working back from the due date of September 1st 2017 for submitting the application, the Board endorsed a timeline for undertaking the planning and preparation. The main stages include:

a) Presenters and members meetings on the 12th and 14th March to discuss the plan, enlist support and encourage participation in a community survey

b) Prepare and distribute the survey form and collate results through April – May and aim to have a report on the survey results to the Board meeting to be held 24th May 2017

c) A Board Strategic Planning workshop to be held in June to evaluate the current plan and and develop a new strategic plan for the 2017-2021 period for inclusion in Broadcast Licence application

d) Progressive preparation and write-up of the submission in accordance with the ACMA template of submission requirements

e) At its meeting to be held on the 23rd August the Board will receive the final submission for endorsement and sign off in order to meet the 1st September due date.

About 30 presenters/members attended the meetings in March and indicated their willingness to become involved in the process, put forward many useful suggestions for promoting the station and gave very useful feedback on a draft survey form. The finalised survey form is currently being distributed to members, listeners and friends so please encourage as many as possible to complete the forms and return them to the studio. The results of the survey will provide valuable supporting information about the role of 3BBR-FM in meeting the needs of the community for inclusion in the submission.

A big thank you to the presenters and members who attended the meetings and to those who have put up their hands to help with jobs such as completing program descriptions, garnering letters of support from friends and listeners, administering the survey, collating survey results, collating and analysing calls to the station, listing CSAs, etc. All of these activities will help in preparing an excellent submission for renewal of our licence.
